Marian Catholic’s head soccer coach, Gilbert Rivera, is dedicated to more than just the team’s performance on the field. His focus extends to instilling professionalism, discipline, and teamwork in his players.

“My decision to coach soccer stems from a desire to pass on the values of professionalism and discipline to the community,” Rivera said. “Soccer is about much more than just playing a game—it’s about teaching teamwork, commitment, and accountability.”

With the upcoming season approaching, Rivera expresses enthusiasm about the team’s camaraderie and their commitment to maintaining high standards. “A strong, unified team culture is at the core of success,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this group of athletes will come together.”

Rivera, who has a background as a former soccer player, draws motivation from his lifelong passion for the sport and its ability to instill valuable life skills in athletes. He emphasizes that teamwork, respect, and discipline are crucial both on and off the field. “The values that soccer teaches—teamwork, individuality, respect, and discipline—are incredibly important to me,” he said. “As a coach, I strive to help my players understand that these qualities will help them both on and off the field.”

This season, Rivera places particular emphasis on mental resilience as a key differentiator for his team. “Being physically prepared is essential but having the mental strength to stay focused and resilient under pressure is what sets successful teams apart,” he said. “We’ll work on fostering a positive mental attitude and seeing challenges as opportunities for growth.”

Rivera’s military background informs his coaching philosophy by emphasizing leadership, resilience, and commitment. He aims to impart these values to his players so they can improve as athletes while also growing as individuals.

Key players expected to make an impact this season include freshman Nyla Williams; sophomores Leah McAvoy, Madison Beachum, and Jimena Galvan; juniors Summer Rivera and Julianna Espinosa; and seniors Mia Bazarko, Val Nelson, and Gianna Arriaga.

As the season approaches, Rivera remains confident that his team’s dedication and unity will lead them through a competitive and rewarding year.
