Zack Sharkey scored a game-high 24 points to lead Marian Catholic to a 58-49 victory over Nazareth Academy on Friday, as the Spartans opened their East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) season with a win.
According to the game report, the Spartans (4-1, 1-0) took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Roadrunners 21-10 to build a lead they never relinquished. Delan Davis added 11 points and Tyler Jolly finished with 10, contributing to Marian’s balanced scoring attack. Cardan Gordon, coming off the bench, knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, marking his second straight strong performance.
Gordon and Davis combined for 14 points in the decisive second quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Marian shot 21 of 47 (44.7%) from the field and made six three-pointers, with Gordon hitting three of them. The Spartans also connected on 10 of 14 free throws (71.4%).
Nazareth (3-3, 0-1) shot 18 of 42 (42.9%) from the field and made four three-pointers, led by Sean Callahan’s 12 points and James Wrzesinski and Carter Johnson each contributing 11 points. The Roadrunners were successful on nine of their twelve free throw attempts (75%).
In addition to their varsity success, Marian also defeated Nazareth in the sophomore game with a score of 59-30.
