Marian Catholic Coach Dan Murray Previews Season, Highlights Strong Roster and Leadership

After a strong offseason, the Marian Catholic women’s basketball team is ready to hit the court for another competitive season, led by Head Coach Dan Murray, who enters his 12th year at the helm. The Spartans are poised to build on last season’s success with a mix of experienced players and emerging talent.

“We’ve returned probably seven of our top eight players from last year,” Murray said. “So, we do return quite a few kids that have an abundance of varsity minutes under their belt. We’re feeling pretty good about where we are right now.”

The Spartans will have to fill the big shoes left by Madison Davis, the 2023 Player of the Year in the Western Illinois Conference, who has since moved on to play at the collegiate level. Davis was a key part of the team’s success last season, but Murray is confident in the group’s ability to step up.

“It’s a big loss obviously,” Murray acknowledged. “But it’s nice to see the kids stepping up who have a lot of varsity experience. It’s just about trying to fill the role that Maddie played for us last year.”

Marian Catholic’s schedule is filled with tough matchups this season. The team will face a strong slate of opponents, including conference rivals Benet and Nazareth, and an annual matchup with league foe, Marist.

“We play in one of the two best conferences in Illinois,” said Murray, referring to the competitive nature of the East Suburban Catholic Conference. “Our schedule is pretty loaded. We’ve got a tournament this weekend, and then another tournament after Christmas. After New Year’s, we head to Florida, and last year we went to California. We’re always rotating these trips, and it’s a great experience for the girls.”

The Spartans’ first official practice was on November 4th, and the team is already preparing for its upcoming events, including this weekend’s tournament. While the Spartans’ season will certainly have its challenges, the team’s core of senior players, combined with a mix of returning and emerging talent, offers plenty of promise.

Murray’s approach to team-building is clear: reload, not rebuild. That mentality has helped the Spartans stay competitive year after year. Sophomores like Vesta Radzlure, who played a smaller role as a freshman, are expected to take on much larger responsibilities this season. Radzlure, who averaged just 7-8 minutes per game last year, is one of several young players that Murray is counting on to contribute more this time around.

“I’m hoping she’ll take a much bigger jump this year,” Murray said of Radzlure. “We’ve also got Ty Jackson, who was our first player off the bench last year. She’ll be moving into a starting role, and we’re really excited about what she can bring.”

Murray has also relied on a strong leadership group this season, with four senior captains: LaParis Poe, Taylor Botton, Alainna Poisson, and Gracie Jensen. All four are committed to continuing their athletic careers in college and bring a level of drive and discipline that is crucial for success on the court.

“These seniors are incredibly self-driven,” Murray said. “They have an incredible work ethic. We’ve been very fortunate to have them in the program for as long as we have. It’s not just about this season; it’s part of their journey to bigger and better things at the collegiate level.”

As the Spartans prepare for the season ahead, they’re ready to embrace the challenges and expectations that come with being one of the top programs in Illinois. With experienced leadership, a competitive schedule, and emerging talent, Marian Catholic is ready to make another run at a successful season.

The Spartans will open their season this weekend, with high hopes for what lies ahead.
