Marian Catholic High School’s fencing team delivered notable performances at the Deerfield-Highland Park Junior Varsity Individual Meet held on November 9th, at Highland Park High School. The event was marked by a gold medal victory and a commendable performance from a novice fencer.
Brazil McGruder achieved a gold medal in the women’s sabre category, overcoming three Homewood-Flossmoor fencers consecutively to secure first place. “It was a dominant performance for McGruder,” highlighting her rapid rise in the competitive scene.
In the men’s epee event, first-year fencer Brian Patterson earned a fifth-place medal in only his second high school competition. His performance signals a promising beginning to his high school fencing journey.
Other members of the Spartans team narrowly missed medaling. Harold Kallies, competing in men’s sabre, and Daniel Becerra, participating in men’s epee, both lost by just one point in their respective round of 16 matches.
The results underscore the ongoing development of Marian Catholic’s fencing program, with both experienced and new fencers making significant progress early in the season.
