With 30 years of coaching experience, Marian Catholic head softball coach Kelly Murray is committed to developing a strong, competitive program while instilling valuable life lessons in her athletes.

According to Murray, her passion for coaching began with her daughters’ involvement in the sport, leading her to a deeper appreciation for the game and a desire to help young athletes grow both on and off the field. “My motivation has always been about developing players not just physically, but mentally,” she said. “Success in softball—and in life—starts with the right mindset.”

As she enters this season, Murray is excited to continue building traditions and shaping the team’s culture. She emphasizes year-round dedication and discipline, instilling a work ethic that extends beyond the four-month season.

A key area of focus this year is player health. With several key returners, staying injury-free will be crucial to the team’s success. Among the players to watch this season are Gracie Jensen (Purdue Northwest commit), Kendyl Rainey (Purdue commit), Jackie Pollock, and Ella DeNormandie, who had a standout offensive season last year. Murray’s coaching philosophy centers on teaching athletes resilience and self-forgiveness.

“Mistakes happen, but it’s how you respond that matters,” Murray said. “I want my players to learn from their experiences, support each other, and play for the team.”

To build team chemistry, Murray plans to incorporate bonding activities such as an escape room challenge to encourage teamwork and unity. “This group has the potential to do great things,” she said. “We’re building something special here, and I’m excited to see it all come together.”
