Shorthanded Marian Catholic struggles against Benet Academy

The Marian Catholic Spartans faced a challenging matchup against Benet Academy, ultimately losing 88-33 on Friday night. The team played without three key starters, making the contest an uphill battle against one of the top teams in the conference.

According to reports, despite the lopsided scoreline, the Spartans demonstrated moments of resilience by relying on younger, less experienced players in a difficult road environment. Marian Catholic (22-8, 6-5 conference) was aiming to recover from a previous 58-44 loss to Nazareth Academy but had to contend with several missing contributors. Meanwhile, Benet Academy (26-2, 11-1 conference) entered the game on a strong run after dominating Joliet Catholic 62-27 in their last outing.

The Spartans struggled to find their rhythm early as Benet capitalized on Marian’s depleted roster to take a commanding 29-7 lead after the first quarter. The challenges continued for Marian in the second quarter, with Benet extending their lead to 54-14 at halftime. Junior shooting guard Nyila Williams fought to keep her team competitive, finishing the half with 12 points and displaying determination.

Head coach Dan Murray acknowledged the difficulties of playing without several key players but viewed it as an opportunity for younger athletes to gain experience. “We’re injured. We had four main kids out. A lot of young kids had to step up,” Murray said. “It was an opportunity for me to see what they can do and what they can’t do. There’s a lot of room for improvement.”

Despite the one-sided result, individual performances provided hope for future development. Williams maintained her strong showing with 12 points, while sophomore shooting guard Abby Gustavson added 11 points, indicating potential growth for the program’s future. Gustavson expressed optimism about her role moving forward: “I feel like it’s a stepping stone because next year we’re losing a lot of players that can shoot,” she said. “So I feel like just using my ability to shoot and getting the ball can really help the program in the coming years.”
